Over the past decade, True Nature Education has been offering exciting travel opportunities in Costa Rica. You are invited to join us for a 2019 Massasoit Community College Costa Rica Adventure, Service, and Sustainability Program.

Experience the rich culture of this incredible country while doing work to support the people, communities, and preservation of the land and natural environment. You will have an unforgettable journey, full of outdoor adventures, education on sustainability, connections with local communities, and service outreach work.

Why travel Abroad?

  • Provides a powerful learning experience.  Seeing the impacts of climate change on Costa Rica and experiencing its incredible biodiversity will help students better appreciate the environment and better understand global environmental issues. In addition, several studies have found that students who studied abroad had improved academic performances, as opposed to those who did not study abroad.
  • Expands perspective.  International travel provides students with the opportunity to experience different cultures and lifestyles and expands perspective.
  • Establishes lifelong values and priorities. International travel can be a profound life experience, which gives students a sense of place and purpose and sometimes helps one establish lifelong values and priorities.
  • Achieves Massasoit’s Global Learning core competency; to foster cross-cultural awareness in an increasingly interconnected world.  In other words, to help our students become global citizens.
  • Helps improve the environmental literacy of students.
  • It’s fun!

Why Costa Rica?

It’s the most biodiverse place in North America! While only the size of West Virginia, it harbors:

  • 12,000 species of plants
  • 1,239 species of butterflies
  • 838 species of birds
  • 440 species of reptiles and amphibians
  • 232 species of mammals
  • ~500,000 species of arthropods (insects, spiders, etc.) !

  • 20 “life zones“ including beaches and mangroves, lowland rainforests, cloud forests, dry deciduous forests, and paramo.
  • Easy to experience the uniqueness of Costa Rica’s ecology, since 25% of the land is protected.
  • Costa Rica is a leader in sustainability and in addressing climate change
  • Roughly 18 % of the country is in national parks and another 13 % is in privately owned preserves. More land is in some form of protection than in any other country.
  • Private conservation is encouraged by forest protection certificates which annually pay landowners about $50 per 2.5 acres.
  • Around 2/3 of Costa Rica’s remaining rainforests are protected
  • Costa Rica is nearing its goal of becoming the first “carbon-neutral” nation, because  99.62 percent of its electricity comes from five renewable sources; hydropower,  wind,  geothermal energy, biomass and solar.
  • In June, Costa Rican government officials announced an ambitious plan to become the world’s first country to achieve a comprehensive national strategy to eliminate single-use plastics by 2021.

Lodging includes electricity, hot water, internet, phone, comfortable beds and linens, and an environment which allows you to rest peacefully after a long day of activities. Most accommodations for large groups are shared. Private rooms are occasionally available for an extra fee on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Throughout the trip, you will be staying in three different incredible lodgings. All accommodations are shared-occupancy rooms with two to three people per room. Rooms vary and may include

either single or double-sized beds.

The first accommodations will be in La Fortuna where you will stay at a sustainable, rainforest eco-lodge hotel providing comfortable accommodations amidst acres of lush gardens, hiking trails, and a secluded jungle. The eco-lodge has a beautiful chlorine-free swimming pool and jacuzzi. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are prepared daily with organic and local ingredients whenever possible.

In Manuel Antonio, you will stay at a stunning beach-front hotel just a few steps away from the Pacific Ocean. Immersed in the rain forest and surrounded by the jungle, this property is the ideal place to experience the biodiversity that makes Costa Rica so special. Rooms are spacious and modern, providing quick access to the beach, pool, and rainforest.

Finally, you will be staying in Monteverde. These rainforest accommodations are in the heart of this renowned cloud forest. I believe coming on this trip took me out of my comfort zone, no actually, it expanded my comfort zone. I feel I am a changed person now and that I am able to to see and experience the beauty of planet Earth. I will take the memories of Costa Rica with me as I keep on with my journey of life.
-Kathryn Hima, Stratford, Connecticut

I am forever grateful and forever changed. I truly found myself here…who I want to be. I am happy, content, and a completely new person. Thank you so much True Nature! I could have never felt this way without you and for that, I amforever indebted.
-Charlotte, Dabrowski Middletown, Connecticut

There are no words to describe how beautiful everything is. Costa Rica takes my breath away. I was surrounded by life, felt closer to the Earth than I have ever felt before. More than that, True Nature and everyone has been so supportive. I have never felt so unselfconscious.
-Allison Waters, San Antonio, Texas

Life is a journey, every pebble on this Earth has its place. Sometimes those pebbles create a stepping stone-something with time, concrete, and strength. This experience was another stepping stone to my life-my personal journey, and I am grateful.
